Ubtan is a traditional South Asian pre-wedding skin treatment used to brighten and soften skin before a wedding. Here's what it is, how it works, and how to use it properly.

What is bridal ubtan?

Ubtan (also spelled "ubtaan") is a paste made from ground herbal ingredients that has been applied to skin before South Asian weddings for centuries. The tradition spans Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh and is still widely practiced in Pakistani weddings as part of the mehndi or dholki rituals before the wedding day.

The purpose is practical as well as ceremonial: consistent application over days leading up to a wedding genuinely brightens and softens skin โ€” something supported by what the ingredients actually do, not just tradition.

What traditional ubtan contains

  • Haldi (Turmeric) โ€” the active ingredient behind ubtan's brightening effect. Curcumin in turmeric inhibits melanin synthesis, which is why consistent use visibly evens skin tone and reduces dark marks. It also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
  • Besan (Chickpea flour) โ€” the exfoliant. The grain of besan physically removes dead skin cells when massaged in, revealing newer skin underneath.
  • Dahi or Dudh (Yoghurt or milk) โ€” the lactic acid in dairy products is a mild AHA that supports skin renewal. Goat milk is particularly effective for this.
  • Rose water โ€” traditional mixing liquid. Slightly acidic, anti-inflammatory, and helps activate the other ingredients.

How to use ubtan before a wedding

For a pre-wedding routine, begin 3โ€“4 weeks before the wedding day and apply 3 times per week. Mix 1 teaspoon of ubtan powder with rose water into a smooth paste. Apply to face, neck, arms, and hands. Leave for 10โ€“15 minutes, then massage in circular motions and rinse. Apply a light moisturiser after every application โ€” turmeric is drying.

Note: turmeric temporarily stains light skin yellow, fading within 1โ€“2 hours. Apply in the evening or account for this when planning your day.
