Bhringraj, Brahmi, and Amla have been used together in Ayurvedic hair care for centuries. Here's what each herb does and why the combination matters.

Why these three herbs appear together in traditional formulas

Ayurvedic hair oils almost universally contain some combination of bhringraj, brahmi, and amla. This isn't coincidence โ€” each herb addresses a different aspect of hair health, and together they cover the main mechanisms behind hair fall and weak hair.

Bhringraj โ€” for scalp circulation and DHT

Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) is called the "king of hair herbs." Its active compounds (eclalbasaponin, wedelolactone) support blood flow to follicles and may reduce scalp sensitivity to DHT, the hormone behind androgenic hair loss. It has the most direct association with hair fall specifically in the traditional literature.

Brahmi โ€” for root strength

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is primarily known as a brain herb, but it's been used in hair care for its effect on hair roots. It's thought to strengthen the papilla cells at the base of hair follicles, reducing breakage at the root. If your hair falls out with a white bulb at the tip rather than breaking mid-shaft, brahmi is the most relevant herb.

Amla โ€” for follicle nourishment and scalp health

Amla (Indian Gooseberry, Phyllanthus emblica) has one of the highest natural concentrations of Vitamin C of any plant. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis, which matters for the structural integrity of hair follicles. It's also a potent antioxidant that protects follicles from oxidative damage โ€” a real factor in premature greying and hair thinning.

The other herbs that complete a good formula

Beyond these three, traditional Ayurvedic hair oils often include hibiscus (conditions and adds shine), fenugreek seeds (a traditional remedy for thinning hair), and carrier oils like coconut, sesame, and castor that provide the absorption base and add their own benefits.
